Publications

Featured Key Publications

My work spans general sociological theory, sociology of knowledge, and the history and sociology of the social sciences. I am particularly interested in epistemology and methodology, structural inequalities and social change.

Holzhauser, N., & Eggert, F. (2019). The Role of Measurement in Theorising about the World. Social Science Information, 58(2), 301–326.

→ This paper shows why measuring social phenomena requires clear theoretical rules, demonstrating that social data and numbers are never purely neutral and that measuring human behavior always depends on how we theoretically define what we compare.

Holzhauser, N. (2021). Quantifying the exclusionary process of canonisation, or How to become a classic of the social sciences. International Review of Sociology, 31(1), 97–122.

→ This paper compares the collective of all 957 recognized sociologists in the 1931 German ‚Handwörterbuch der Soziologie‘ against the published ‚classics‘ of decades later to see who survived in history. Using Bourdieu’s capital theory, the paper provides empirical evidence that while long-term memory for men depended on scholarly impact rather than institutional power in their contemporary fields, female scholars were completely erased regardless of their achievements.

Holzhauser, N. (2026). Quantitative Methods as Reflexive Epistemology for Rewriting Disciplinary Histories. In A. Ploder, N. Holzhauser, & S. Moebius (Eds.), The Routledge International Handbook of the Histories of Sociology. London: Routledge.

→ Establishes the framework of ‚Archival Repair‘, demonstrating how quantitative methods can be used reflexively and critically to uncover historical silences, test hypotheses of systemic bias, and repair gaps in collective memory.

Ploder, A., Holzhauser, N., & Moebius, S. (Eds.) (2026). The Routledge International Handbook of the Histories of Sociology. London: Routledge.

→ Brings together global perspectives and critical methodologies to challenge Eurocentric narratives of social science, offering a framework for recovering forgotten scholars and rewriting disciplinary histories worldwide.

Bothner, F., Schrader, S. M., Holzhauser, N., & Bandau, F. (2022). Never Let a Serious Crisis Go to Waste: The Introduction of Supplemental Carbon Taxes in Europe. Journal of Public Policy, 42(2), 343–363.

→ Examines how major economic crises create rare windows of opportunity for climate reform, analyzing how structural fiscal pressures and the strategic agency of individual ’science and policy entrepreneurs‘ interact to pass carbon taxes across Europe.
